Grace Holden

Jazz Vocalist

Biography

Grace Holden was born to Oscar and Leala Holden in 1930. These proud parents provided Grace with a silver-spoon lifestyle that became tarnished by "The Great Depression". Their homestead was located in the central area of Seattle.

Oscar Holden Sr. has become known as "the patriarch of Seattle jazz" and his likeness graces the cover of Jackson Street After Hours: The Roots of Jazz in Seattle (by Paul de Barros).

Grace and her brothers Oscar Jr., Robert, Dave, Ron and James were all gifted with musical talents and played with various bands in the late 1940's as well as at home during the family musical hour. The Holden children mimicked their parents by performing and sharpening their musical skills. The family was constantly learning. Their motto was and is "You never know it all, never stop learning and never stop trying to learn".

Grace and her brothers took courses in basic harmony and rhythm from the best the best. Grace was influenced by the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Lena Horne and Dinah Washington. She was the first piano player in the "swing band" along with her brother Oscar Jr., Quincy Jones and Charles Taylor.

Most recently, Grace has performed in such places as Jazz Alley, Club New Orleans, Root's Picnic, Seattle Goodwill Industries 75th Birthday Party, Festival Sundiata, Experience Music Project (EMP), Seattle Girls "Paint The Town Red", "Jump For Joy", Admiral Congregational Church UCC and numerous private parties.

Grace has had the pleasure of working with a number of well known musicians including John Morton, Floyd Standifer, Buddy Catlett, George Griffin, Ed Lee, Pete Leinonen, Ralph Davis, Jerry Franks and Keith Terhune.

Grace Holden lives in Seattle, Washington and is the Holden family historian. She continues to perform in various entertainment spots throughout the Seattle area including her mainstay, "The Immaculate Conception Gospel Choir".

Grace's newly released CD "Grace To You" is a collaboration of many musical gifts and will feature a wonderful song penned by her father, entitled "You're All I Need".
